The Wall Path

The questions that come up

Booking & fitness

Do I need to book anything before I go?

Not to walk the trail itself — it's a free, open public right of way. But accommodation in the smallest stops (Once Brewed, Gilsland) is limited enough that booking ahead in peak season matters, and baggage transfer needs booking in advance too. See planning and accommodation.

How fit do I need to be?

Fit enough for repeated, sustained hill walking over several consecutive days, particularly for the Chollerford–Gilsland crags section — the National Trail itself rates the route "moderate." It's walkable by a reasonably active adult without technical hiking experience, but not a flat, casual stroll for its full length.

Is there a fee to walk the trail?

No — the trail itself is free, open public access. Individual forts along the way (Chesters, Housesteads, Birdoswald, Vindolanda) charge their own separate entry fees, since they're managed and maintained as heritage sites in their own right.

On the trail

Can I walk on top of the wall for photos?

Almost nowhere — the National Trail deliberately routes walkers alongside the wall, not on it, everywhere except one roughly 150-metre public right of way through a small wood at Housesteads. It's a conservation rule, not trail etiquette you can bend for a photo. See the full explanation.

Is it true the Sycamore Gap tree is gone?

The famous tree next to Milecastle 39 was illegally felled in September 2023; two men were convicted in May 2025 and sentenced that July. The stump itself is alive and has produced new shoots every growing season since, confirmed as recently as 2026 — it's not simply gone, but it no longer stands as the tree in the photographs everyone recognises.

Who it's for

Can I do it with kids?

Individual day sections — particularly the flatter stages, or a short there-and-back from Once Brewed or Housesteads — work well as family days out. The full multi-day thru-hike, with its 15–18-mile stages and steep crag terrain, is a harder sell for most families than picking one or two highlight stops.

What's the difference between this site and the official National Trail website?

We're independent and unaffiliated — this is a planning resource that cross-references National Trails' own information alongside English Heritage, the Vindolanda Trust, and other named sources, not a replacement for checking current opening hours and conditions directly with those organisations before you travel.
