01 The pre-wall settlement
Vindolanda is an auxiliary fort and civilian settlement that existed years before Hadrian's Wall was ever built, later rebuilt and garrisoned in step with the wall itself. It's most famous for the Vindolanda writing tablets: wafer-thin, postcard-sized wooden fragments, often under 2 mm thick, first discovered in 1973 and now recognised as the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain. They record ordinary daily life rather than official history — supply lists, requests for payment, and, most famously, a birthday party invitation from one officer's wife to another. New tablets and finds still turn up during live excavation seasons most summers.
02 Nine forts, one on top of another
At least nine successive timber-and-turf forts were built on the same spot over roughly 500 years, each garrison demolishing its own fort and sealing the remains under a fresh layer of clay and turf before the next was raised — the airless, waterlogged conditions this created are exactly what preserved the writing tablets, along with leather shoes, textiles, and even insect remains, in extraordinary condition.
03 A live excavation
Vindolanda has been under continuous excavation since archaeologist Eric Birley bought the site in 1929, with his son Robin directing the dig from the 1960s until handing over to his own son Andrew in 2015 — the site still runs open excavation seasons most summers, and new tablets and finds continue to surface.
04 Why it's a detour, not a stage stop
Vindolanda sits slightly south of the wall line itself and the main trail, meaning it's a worthwhile short detour off Stage 3 or 4 rather than a fort you pass through automatically — build extra time into whichever day you walk through for it.
05 Visiting
Vindolanda is a stop on the 122 bus route between Hexham and Haltwhistle, making it straightforward to reach even on a day you're not walking that stage of the trail itself.
