The River Tyne riverside path near Newcastle Quayside on Hadrian's Wall Path
  1. Setting out

The trail's flattest, most urban stage, following the north bank of the River Tyne out of Wallsend through Newcastle's Quayside, then out past Newburn into open country as the day ends. Almost entirely tarmac and riverside path, with no significant climbing.

  2. Landmarks en route

Segedunum Fort at the very start, industrial and post-industrial Tyneside riverside scenery through central Newcastle, and the transition into farmland as Heddon-on-the-Wall approaches.

  3. Arriving & practicalities

With no wall-related archaeology visible above ground for most of the day and the trail's flattest, least scenic walking, this is the stage most short-itinerary walkers cut first — see the day-count planner for exactly when that trade-off makes sense.

  4. Baggage & logistics

If you're using a baggage-transfer service (Hadrian's Haul, Sherpa Van, and Hadrian's Bags all cover this stretch), the season runs February to October: bags are typically collected from your accommodation by 9am and delivered to the next by 4pm, one bag per person up to 20kg — have it ready and correctly labelled before you set off each morning.
